The North East of England has a long history and tradition of allotment gardening, with Newcastle no exception. Newcastle City Council manages over 65 allotment sites across the city, which host around 3,500 allotment plots.

Those plots come in various shapes and sizes, with a traditional full-sized allotment officially measuring 10 poles (or perches/rods), which equals roughly 250–300 square metres. However, due to demand often outstripping supply, many councils and allotment associations now divide these into smaller, more manageable 5-pole (half-plot) or 2.5-pole (quarter-plot) options.

Allotment sites in Newcastle are typically managed by independent associations who elect a committee to take care of the day-to-day running of the sites. This might be good for the council (and even the allotment sites), but can make it difficult to know where to start when it comes to finding and applying for an allotment.
