On the 5th of April, the eagle-eyed folks of Heaton might have noticed a teaser drop relating to the next independent food stop to open up on Chillingham Road.
Scranners Arms, the team behind the food served up at Tanners Arms and The Blue Star Newcastle posted the below video, introducing us to ‘237 East‘:
It’s opening at a great time, on the back of Scranners Arms winning the Food Battles ‘Battle of the Burger 2026’ at Wylam Brewery (for the fourth time!)
When will 237 East, Chillingham Road, open?
The video was posted alongside the simple caption: “237 East. April”, so although no definitive date yet, we know it’ll open its doors at some point this month. 237 Chillingham Road is no stranger to popular eateries, with Hide having been its former occupant.
What happened to Hide?
Hide was the sister restaurant to Nest, and Flight bar, and after opening in October 2024 earned itself a listing in the Michelin guide in July 2025. In early January 2026 the team announced the permanent closure of Hide, citing the challenges faced throughout 2025 resulting in the business becoming unsustainable. It wasn’t the first place to leave 237 Chillingham Road behind, with the previous custodian, The Brownie Bar, bringing its shutters down for the final time in 2022.
What happened to The Brownie Bar?
The Brownie Bar was in that spot for around six years, with the final trading day coming in December 2022. Despite leaving their coffee shop premises behind, the business is still going strong, with a focus on their online shop, weddings and events. You can often find them on Armstrong Bridge as part of the Jesmond Food Market too.
Stay tuned for 237 East
We’ll add the 237 East listing to Hello Heaton once it opens.
